Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Just cut a couple of trees from our Christmas tree field. All home grown and carried a few metres to the ?. Can’t get much more low carbon than that!

First North Devon Grapes of the 2021
Seems early for grapes. But these seedless eaters are really sweet and juicy. Admittedly, they were grown in the greenhouse, but the first bunch of many to come. Delicious!
Pickled Eggs
With spring well underway, at this time of year the geese, chickens and ducks are in full lay so we have quite a few eggs.
This year we have decided to turn our surplus into pickled eggs. Really easy to make, here is our recipe & method:
- Hard boil a dozen eggs;
- In a pan, add 1 litre of water and 150ml of vinegar (we use spirt vinegar);
- Add 80 grams of sugar, 50 grams of salt, two bay leaves, a tablespoon of mustard seeds and 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds;
- Bring to the boil and add two sliced onions and allow to return to the boil;
- Layer the eggs in a sterilised screw top/ Kilner jar (fill the jar with boiling water to sterilise), covering each layer with the boiling liquor;
- Seal the jar and allow to cool.
Good Friday Breakfast
Even though we are in lockdown, it could be worse! The weather is fantastic! The sun and warmth maybe shining in through the windows, or you have the opportunity to sit outside ….. it could be worse ….. it could be raining!
This morning we sat outside and had a lovely breakfast with homemade jam made with homegrown fruit!
Frosty Morning
Quite beautiful this morning. Everything covered in frost glinting in the early morning sunlight. This Witch Hazel looked like a little glimmering jewel.
North Devon Homegrown Hazel Nuts
Today has probably been the first chilly morning, the temperature is beginning to turn. However, it is dry and sunny, so a chance to gather in some of the nuts.
We have a small young nut orchard with cultivated varieties. Primarily, hazel nuts, but also walnuts and sweet chestnuts.
Before Mr & Mrs Squirrel take my hazel nuts, I thought I would get in there first and pick them.
The walnuts and chestnuts aren’t quite ready yet, so will leave them for another day.
